Social Security Claiming Calculator

Social Security Claiming Calculator

Claim early for a smaller check sooner, or wait for a bigger check later. Compare up to three claiming ages and see when waiting pays off.

Total Benefits Received by Age
Year-by-Year Totals

Uses Social Security’s formulas: claiming before full retirement age reduces your benefit by 5/9 of 1% a month for the first 36 months and 5/12 of 1% a month after that; waiting past full retirement age adds 2/3 of 1% a month (8% a year) until 70. Totals assume benefits start in the month you reach each claiming age and grow with the COLA you enter. Does not include spousal or survivor benefits, taxes, or the earnings test if you work while claiming before full retirement age. Educational illustration only.

How the Social Security Claiming Calculator Works

Enter your benefit at full retirement age and your birth year, then choose up to three claiming ages. The calculator shows each monthly benefit, the running totals, and the age at which waiting pays off.

What Your Claiming Age Means

When you claim is a lifelong decision. The right answer depends on your health, your spouse’s benefits, how you’ll cover the years before you claim, and how Social Security works with your pension, TSP and taxes. For many federal retirees, the FERS Supplement ending at 62 shapes the decision too. That’s the conversation we help you have.
