FEGLI Reduction Comparison Calculator

FEGLI Reduction Comparison Calculator

Enter your salary, current age, and FEGLI elections to see how each Basic Life reduction schedule compares over retirement.

How the FEGLI Reduction Comparison Calculator Works

Enter your salary at retirement, your retirement age, your Option B multiplier, and your reduction elections. The calculator projects Basic Life and Option B coverage and estimated premiums at ages 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, and 90. Coverage and premiums both change with age based on the reduction schedule you elect at retirement.

Basic Life coverage equals your salary rounded up to the next $1,000, plus $2,000. Option B is a multiple of your salary (1x through 5x). Option A is a flat $10,000 that reduces to $2,500 after age 65. All three options have separate reduction elections.

The results assume standard reduction schedules beginning the later of age 65 or retirement. Actual FEGLI premiums are published by OPM and adjusted periodically. Consult OPM or your federal-retirement advisor for exact rates that apply to your situation.

This calculator is provided as an educational tool for federal employees in the Denver metro area and across the Colorado Front Range. For a complete monthly retirement income projection, request a personalized Federal Retirement Report.

What Your FEGLI Election Means

Your FEGLI decisions at retirement lock in three trade-offs: how much life insurance coverage you keep, how much you pay in premiums, and how each changes with age. The calculator shows what coverage and premium look like at each five-year age band. The pattern that emerges depends heavily on which reduction options you elect.

The right decision depends on your specific family situation — spouse income after your death, available retirement savings, whether private insurance is underwritable at your age and health, and whether you plan to work in retirement.

This calculator is one piece of a broader retirement plan. It does not model your FERS pension, TSP withdrawal strategy, Social Security timing, or FERS Supplement — all of which interact with the decision this calculator addresses.

For federal employees who want a broader overview of how the pieces fit together, our Federal Retirement Workshop walks through every major federal benefit program in plain language.
