FERS Retirement Calculator

This FERS retirement calculator estimates the annual FERS basic annuity you can expect to receive from the Federal Employees Retirement System, based on your years of creditable service and your high-3 average salary. Some federal employees search for a “FERS pension calculator” and some for a “FERS retirement calculator” — same tool, same math. Enter your service years and high-3 below to see your projected FERS pension in a few seconds.

FERS Pension Calculator

Estimates the gross annual FERS basic annuity using the standard formula — high-3 average salary, creditable service, and the applicable multiplier.

Add unused sick leave
Estimated Gross Pension
$4,826 /mo
$57,916 per year
Creditable service used 30y 0m
Multiplier 1.1%
High-3 average $175,504
$175,504 × 30.000 yrs × 1.1%
✓ Enhanced 1.1% rate (age 62+, 20+ years)

This is a gross estimate of the FERS basic annuity before any reductions. It does not reflect the Survivor Benefit Plan election, FEHB or FEGLI premiums, federal or state taxes, or any deposit / redeposit penalties. Figures are illustrative — confirm creditable service with a Certified Summary of Federal Service.

How the FERS Pension Calculator Works

Enter three pieces of information — your high-3 average salary, your total years and months of creditable federal service, and your age at retirement — and the calculator returns your estimated gross FERS basic annuity. The formula matches the official OPM calculation: high-3 × creditable service × multiplier. The multiplier is 1.0% in most cases, or 1.1% if you retire at age 62 or later with at least 20 years of service.

You can also add unused sick leave hours. Sick leave converts to creditable service via OPM’s 2,087-hour chart and is added to your years and months. Sick leave never lets you retire earlier — it only increases your pension once you are already eligible.

The result shown is your gross FERS basic annuity before any reductions. Survivor Benefit Plan elections, FEHB premiums, FEGLI premiums, and federal income tax withholding will reduce the amount you actually receive each month. The calculator does not model those reductions.

This calculator is provided as an educational tool for federal employees in the Denver metro area and across the Colorado Front Range. For a complete monthly retirement income projection, request a personalized Federal Retirement Report.

What Your Pension Estimate Means

Your FERS basic annuity is the foundation of your federal retirement income, but it is not the only piece. The calculator returns your gross annuity — the starting point. Your actual monthly retirement check will reflect several adjustments.

If you elect a Survivor Benefit Plan annuity for your spouse, the standard 10 percent reduction comes off the gross. If you continue FEHB into retirement (and almost everyone should), your FEHB premium share is deducted. FEGLI premiums climb sharply at ages 65 and 70 and may be deducted depending on your election. Federal income tax withholding is applied last.

If you retire before age 62 with the right service, you may also receive the FERS Supplement — a separate payment that bridges to Social Security and is calculated differently. The Supplement is not included in this calculator.
